What are film capacitors?
1:57
Metallized polypropylene film capacitors use a polypropylene dielectric with a thin layer of metal deposited on it. This film is then wound around a core, leads are attached, and the capacitor is enclosed in a plastic case. Polypropylene capacitors have a lower energy density than electrolytic capacitors, but they still have a high capacitance density and offer other advantages that make them ideal in various applications. Polypropylene capacitors are a dry, nonpolarized technology with stable capacitance over temperature. They can handle higher ripple currents, higher pulse and surge voltages, and they’re suitable for high frequency applications. The metallized construction also provides a self-healing capability for the capacitors. If overheating, high voltage transients, or other events cause a fault in the dielectric, a breakdown will occur that vaporizes the surrounding metallization, preventing permanent shorting. This results in higher reliability, longer operational life, and a more graceful failure mechanism. Eaton offers a broad and growing portfolio of metallized polypropylene film capacitors with ratings and performance optimized for different applications. Eaton DC-Link film capacitors offer excellent current handling, low loss, and long operational lifetime in DC-Link applications for EVs, solar inverters, and other high performance DC filtering applications. Eaton safety film capacitors provide high reliability, high pulse handling, and overvoltage stress withstanding in safety critical Class X and Class Y AC line filtering applications. DC-Link and safety capacitors are offered in THB Grade IIIB and AEC-Q200 qualified versions for use in challenging automotive and industrial environments.
