Smart sensors for smart grids: GridAdvisor Series II
12:06
Grid modernization is converting the electrical grid into a smart grid by adding intelligent devices, event-driven automation, and software all working together. The goal is to increase resiliency, reliability and security while also minimizing costs. This is all done even as global electrification and digitalization demands increase. Smart sensors are essential to grid modernization as they offer monitoring and communication capabilities. This allows utility operators to increase response time to faults by being notified of the issue and its location. Yzhi Alexander, Application Engineer, visits the Power System Experience Center (PSEC) to discuss one of Eaton’s smart grid solutions, the GridAdvisor II smart sensor. A simple yet sophisticated device, the GridAdvisor II can: • Measure load current and fault current • Monitor recloser and capacitor assets • Read and report load flow magnitude and direction • Calculates integrated demand readings, reported in real time Essentially, the GridAdvisor Series II smart sensor is a communicating, energy harvesting sensor used to detect and report faults. It can also provide load profiling and internal diagnostic information for planning and maintenance purposes.
