Safety switches - featuring the double door safety switch

In today’s world it’s a high priority to create a safer environment for everyone close to and working on electrical equipment. With this intention, safety switches have evolved to offer more robust protection for equipment and personnel. Safety switches are a common disconnecting means for service entrance and motors, while simultaneously providing motors with fault protection. Erik Hurd, Senior Power System Experience Center (PSEC) Engineer, explains types of safety switches and National Electrical Code (NEC) article 430.102B that necessitates them. Erik goes on to discuss Eaton’s compartmentalized fusible safety switch, the double door line isolation switch. This enhanced switch is a two-door design that places an emphasis on safety. Within the enclosure there is an internal barrier that separates the upper switching compartment from the lower fuse compartment. This allows operators to access the fuse compartment without any exposure to line-side power, providing enhanced safety during fuse replacement. Erik also demonstrates Eaton’s OEM line isolation switch which provides an external disconnecting means for industrial control panels. This panel also allows an operator to access the control panel without exposure to the line-side voltage. This results in enhanced safety and allows for reduced PPE, as well as improves worker dexterity and mobility.
