AC and DC conversion with rectifiers and inverters
7:07
Modern power systems commonly require the conversion of AC and DC power. Seth So, Power Systems Experience Center Engineer, delves deeper from our previous video where we explained what AC and DC power is. Here, Seth discusses how AC to DC power conversion can be accomplished using half wave and full wave rectifiers. The core component in rectifiers are diodes which allow current to pass through in only one direction. The same method is used in 3 phase power with what is known as a 6-pulse rectifier. The conversion of DC to AC power is done using an inverter. The core component in inverters are transistors, two of which are insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) and metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFET). Transistors act as electronic switches by turning the incoming DC on and off to mimic an AC waveform, this technique is called pulse width modulation (PWM). Seth also explains how key devices in today’s power systems use both rectifiers and inverters such as variable frequency drives (VFDs) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs).
