Reduced voltage soft starters (RVSS) explained | Eaton PSEC

A reduced voltage soft starter, or RVSS, is electronic devices used to start and control the speed of electric motors by gradually increasing voltage. This gradual in increase in voltage is what allows the motor to have a smoot startup. Kyle Harrison, Product Manager of Medium Voltage Control Assemblies, explains RVSS benefits and features by first comparing across the line, or full voltage starters, to an RVSS. As noted in the graphs, you can see that RVSSs reduce the inrush current commonly associated with motor startup. Reducing the inrush current leads to less stress on electrical and mechanical systems while also mitigating voltage drops and extending the life of the motor. We also detail how an RVSS works by using a series of thyristors, or silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs), by illustrating a three-line diagram. As mentioned before, the other benefit of RVSSs is that they allow for speed control of motors based on application such as kick start, ramp start, current limit, and soft stop. Kyle also explains additional RVSS benefits such as: • Minimize peak current – leads to energy savings • Reduce voltage drop – by providing a gradual voltage increase • Prevents water hammer effect – beneficial for pump systems • Extend equipment life – by reducing the mechanical stress • Economical choice for motor control – for applications that require speed and torque control only during startup and ramp down Finally, Kyle explains how key benefits of Eaton’s Ampgard RVSS and how it is the first soft starter in the market to meet UL 347 ratings, roll-in and roll-out SL contactors, the draw-out SCR truck, and the exclusive pre-start check system.
