The MOV and GDT are designed so that the GDT isolates the MOV from small transients that won’t damage the system, preventing unnecessary aging of the MOV, while large transients will activate the GDT so that the MOV can clamp the voltage and prevent damage to the system. Eaton Bussmann series MOVGTs are UL certified and available in radial leaded packages with disc sizes from 7 to 20 millimeters, providing a drop-in replacement for standard MOVs while providing enhanced protection. They’re offered with maximum continuous operating voltage ratings from 70 to 600 volts and surge current withstand ratings up to 5 kiloamps. The MOV and GDT in series also enable greater durability, with the MOVGTs able to withstand far more surge events than traditional MOVs.
